What would you say if I told you you could stay the night in a home that some think harbors deadly and demonic secrets? With a tragic and haunting backstory on the plains of Kansas, today we look at one of the most haunted places in the country. Let’s explore the Sallie House in Atchinson, Kansas and the horrifying tragedy that led to its status as most haunted. Today on Ghost to Coast, we’re dipping our toes into the demonic.
When the home was built at the turn of the century, it was inhabited by a local physician, who turned the bottom floor into examination rooms for his patients. The doctor and his family lived upstairs on the second story. One day, a 6-year-old girl was brought into the examination room by her frantic mother. The girl complained of extreme stomach pain and as the doctor began his examination, she screamed as if being tortured by the physician. After a few minutes, the girl passed from what was assumed to be a burst appendix.
This girl was Sallie, for whom the home is named today.
Decades later, in the 1990s, a new family moved into the home and immediately noticed that their family dog refused to enter the nursery and would growl and bark as some unseen stranger in the room. The haunting only got more terrifying from there, as the malevolent spirits in the home terrorized the family. Fires started inexplicably with no visible source or cause. The husband would wake up with deep, three clawed scratches on his back and chest. The ghost never attacked or terrorized the wife or the baby, seemingly only hoping to cause pain and terror for the man of the house.
The hauntings seemed to take on a demonic turn, with paranormal investigators captured EVPs of growling and would leave the house with bruises and unexplained scratches as well. Many believe the haunting began with Sallie decades earlier, but others assert that ghosts of children could be masks used by demonic entities to gain trust in the home they are terrorizing. Another, middle aged woman is said to also haunt the home and is responsible for the more terrifying paranormal activity.
The couple did not keep the home, moving as if chased out of the terrifying abode.
You can even spend the night in the now-abandoned home, with paranormal investigations being frequent in the famously haunted kansas farmhouse. Many believe the ghosts haunting the house are “man hating ghosts,” with women and children seemingly unbothered and unharmed, whereas those of the male persuasion take the brunt of the paranormal activity.
The Sallie House has been featured on dozens of television programs dedicated to the paranormal. Ghost Adventures most famously stayed the night, as did the crew from Buzzfeed Unsolved. Others include A & E, The Travel Channel, The Discovery Channel, and the Syfy Channel. If you’re brave enough, you can go to the Sallie House yourself. But if you’re a man, you might want to be more cautious inside the potentially haunted or demonically possessed home in Kansas.
