Between the stacks of the lone library in Green River, you might find more than just that particular book you were searching for. You might find someone from beyond the grave perusing the tomes as well. Sweetwater County Library in Green River is our next pick for Ghost to Coast, and with a dark history behind it, it’s no wonder why.

When Green River was first being founded, the location that the library now sits was the town cemetery. In the 1920s, a mass exhumation took place as the town moved those interred there to the current cemetery. Barracks for veterans returning from World War II were built on the location, but during construction, bodies from the old cemetery that had been missed were found. It’s said that there still are bodies buried below the library to this day, with landscaping on the area as recently as 1983 finding more unearthed graves still.

Those who work at the library are proud of their ghosts, however, with the lights flickering on and off, unknown figures walking the building and disappearing, and even strange technological occurrences on the site. According to American Library Magazine, one of the strangest occurrences happened in the late eighties when a librarian turned from her computer for just a moment, and when she turned back, her name was spelled out on the screen: “I don’t think the system could have done that itself,” The Librarian explained. “It had no word-processing capabilities, and at that time we didn’t have email. Her name appeared in quite large letters … with nothing else on the screen.”

The library still has a “Ghost Log,” and invites anyone who has paranormal experiences in the library to add their story to the book. It includes tales of disembodied voices, tapping on the shelves being returned in an empty aisle, and typewriters writing on their own on several occasions.

You might take home more than a fabulous book if you visit the Sweetwater County Library, as those restless spirits that may rest under the foundation look for some kind of ghostly connection with the patrons.
